Resumo
O artigo relata pesquisa empírica sobre a ocupação territorial de municípios do Vale do Paraíba Sul-fluminense, nos séculos XVIII e XIX, inferindo que houve um ordenamento territorial, disciplinado pela doação de sesmarias, que deram origem à abertura de estradas e instalação de freguesias e de estruturas de posse e ordenamento da vida social. Essas ocupações formaram um processo de urbanização na província fluminense pelo elo entre região e projetos de colonização.

The coffe and the cities

Abstract
The paper reports an empirical research about the territorial occupation of cities in Vale do Paraíba Sul-fluminense in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, supposing that there was a land arrangement based on the donation of sesmarias, which led to the roads construction, installation of freguesias, structures of ownership and social life planning. These occupations started urbanization process in the Fluminense region, link between the region and colonization projects.
