The glass ceiling and structural challenges in academic careers form the basis of this study, which presents the findings of a research project conducted with female researchers affiliated with the National System of Researchers in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. These results were obtained using a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, with the objectives of examining the glass ceiling and identifying the main challenges they face in academic production. The body of findings supports the conclusion that female researchers from Tamaulipas affiliated with the SNII face a glass ceiling that does not manifest as a single, discrete barrier, but rather as a system of interconnected constraints operating at the structural, institutional, cultural, and subjective levels. Among the main challenges to academic production are an overload of responsibilities, lack of time, and lengthy editorial processes, as well as difficulties in balancing personal and professional life, lack of institutional support, and explicit gender discrimination. This study makes specific contributions to the field of gender studies in higher education and science within the Latin American context.
