The Role of Intellectual Property

The local productive arrangement is the result of collective effort of different agents in product development and/or services in a given geographical area. Intellectual property can be important tool governance among agents and appropriation of economic returns of economic activity and local development. This article discusses the use of distinctive signs within the scope of intellectual property, such as collective trademarks and geographical indications, as instruments to protect and to add value to the local productive arrangement of entertainment. The effectiveness of the use of intellectual property in the entertainment production arrangements will depend on the degree of maturity and governance among the agents. The article adopts a qualitative approach, focusing on the discussion and analysis of the use of distinctive signs in intellectual property and how these can protect and add value to Local Productive Arrangements. This analysis involves a literatura review and the study of practical cases. It is possible to conclude that the discussion of the use of Intellectual Property in the context of Local Productive Arrangements (LPAs) is relevant. The effectiveness of the use of distinctive signs of intellectual property in an entertainment LPA will depend on the maturity, governance, integration, and objectives of the involved agents.
