The açaí production chain offers an inclusive economic opportunity for rural Amazonian communities, with a growing market, particularly internationally. However, the intense commercialization dynamics of the fruit have exerted pressures that threaten the biodiversity of the Amazonian forests where it is harvested. Addressing the sustainability challenges in açaí production involves not only structural and public governance issues but also locally developed strategies. This article explores the experience of the Bailique Archipelago communities in Amapá, who, organized through the Community Protocol, sought international development cooperation (IDC) as a strategy to obtain Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for açaí management. The qualitative research, guided by action research, analyzed this pioneering experience from the perspective of local actors. The study aimed to investigate whether IDC, in the certification process, upheld the principle of local actors' leadership and genuinely supported the sustainability of açaí production within the communities. The results indicate that the communities' organization through the Community Protocol was a key element in ensuring that local interests guided the process and allowed for balanced relationships in the cooperation efforts.
