Geographical Indication (GI) is an intellectual property tool developed to protect and valorize unique products and their production regions, with an impact on the preservation of traditional cultural expressions and the expansion of commercialization through associative actions. With this focus, the present study aimed to analyze the potential of the municipality of Coronel Xavier Chaves-MG to be recognized as a Geographical Indication for the production of artisanal alambique cachaça. To achieve this, a qualitative, descriptive, and analytical research was conducted, following the SEBRAE methodology entitled "Guide for Diagnosing a Potential Geographical Indication." Aspects such as the product’s reputation and its connection with the municipality, the involvement of producers and other agents in the production chain, and the region’s historical, cultural, and socio-economic characteristics were analyzed. The results revealed attributes that link cachaça to the local territory, giving it a unique identity and justifying the interest in obtaining GI registration. Although the recognition could bring economic and cultural benefits, the lack of a producers' association represents a challenge. The formation of a representative entity is recommended to strengthen governance and facilitate the GI registration process.
