According to Brazilian Law No. 11,340/2006, known as the “Maria da Penha Law,” it is the main legal framework for protecting women victims of gender-based violence in Brazil. Article 8 requires studies and research that contribute to understanding the causes, frequency, and consequences of this violence. However, the underreporting of cases of domestic violence against women and the difficulty of public bodies in organizing and analyzing this data hinder the development of studies that guide public policies and actions by organizations defending women’s rights. To fill this gap, this research aims to analyze, through descriptive analysis and logistic regression, the number of records and characteristics of women victims of violence and their aggressors in Varginha, MG. For this purpose, data from the Minas Gerais State Health Department (SES), available on the Brazilian Open Data Portal, were used. The results showed that the victims of violence had an average age of 31 years during the analyzed period; most were Black; They declared themselves heterosexual, and, unfortunately, in 50.5% of cases, the occurrence was repetitive; the victim’s residence was the location with the highest incidence of occurrences; and the majority of aggressors were male. Finally, based on the main findings, we propose actions that the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in partnership with the CMDM (Municipal Council for Women’s Rights), can adopt to prevent and combat violence against women in Varginha-MG.
